Chandragiri hill is located 7 Km from Thankot, southwest of Kathmandu in Chandragiri Municipality. The peak is the second highest peak, i.e. 2551 meters above the sea level surrounding the valley only after Pulchoki hill. Chandragiri is majorly significant from its historic, religious, and natural aspect. The temple of Bhaleshor Mahadev stands on the top of the hill, which has a huge mythological belief. It is believed that the forehead of goddess Satidevi, the wife of Lord Shiva had fallen off at the site where the temple stands today when Lord Shiva was in the course of an insane mourning trip carrying the dead body of his beloved wife. The history of Nepal connects with this place, as King Prithivi Narayan Shah thought of conquering the valley standing at the top and watching the then prosperous valley from Chandragiri hill. Also, the folk tales say that the King meditated to Bhaleshor Mahadev with a wish of conquering the valley. Mahadev being amused by the King’s meditation granted him Victory.
Today, Chandragiri hill has been developed as one of the country’s most important tourist attractions for both domestic as well as international visitors. The hill is now being connected by two cable car stations transporting visitors up and down the hill. Chandragiri hill is also famous for short hikes to escape the hustle of the city and soak oneself in beauty of the nature for a short time, usually a day. The major attractions here are the cable car ride, the Valley viewpoint, Bhaleshor Mahadev temple, Playgrounds, Lawns and Meadows, Shopping arcades, the Resort.
